FW MOVIE PICK: CATS (2019)

Cats' review: Just like the polarizing stage musical on which it ...

You would think making a musical film adaptation of “Cats” would be a smash hit considering a cast of incredible actors and having the film directed by Tom Hooper in his second feature musical following Les Misérables; but you would be wrong along with hacking hairballs after watching this catastrophe! The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as the “Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The film features an ensemble cast, including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward. This is literally the worst thing you’ll ever see in 2019 as you get to sit through nearly two hours of entering into the CGI uncanny valley that doesn’t leave much to the imagination and wondering way they would sink thespians such as Ian and Judi (who aren’t singers) this low. The only actress that seems to be having fun is Taylor Swift in the song “Macavity”, but even that starts to get cringey when you see Idris Elba having skin colored fur. But wait, it gets even worse than that, the Rebel Wilson sequence with her singing “Jennyanydots: The Old Gumbie Cat” is pure nightmare fuel, especially with Mice and Cockroaches with Human Faces (I wish I was making this crap up). And don’t get me started on James Corden’s painful comedy routine in the song “Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town”. Overall this furry farce is a complete disaster that not even Jennifer Hudson’s emotional performance in the song “Memory” can make up for this feline fiasco!
