FW TV PICK: STAR VS. THE FORCES OF EVIL

Probably the best way to describe this strange Disney Channel Animated series is, “It’s gonna get a little weird, Gonna get a little wild. I ain’t from ’round here, I’m from another dimension!” When magical princess Star Butterfly receives a royal magic wand for her 14th birthday, she proves to her parents that she is not ready for the responsibility that comes with it. As a result, they send her to a place that doesn’t have magic — Earth — in hopes that she will gain maturity. Upon her arrival, Star is given a family to help guide her, so she moves in with the Diaz family, which includes teenage son Marco. Star takes Marco with her as she battles villains — both in their high school and throughout the universe — as she attempts to protect her powerful wand. When I heard that this show was ending, I knew I had to binge-watch it just to see why its so popular. Like other people noticing, the show wasn’t exactly popular at first in its first season, because it was too nonsensical and random, but as the series progressed it grew on a lot of people, including myself. The show’s humor is basically a combination of bizarre zaniness from other shows such as “Ren and Stimpy” and “Invader Zim”; which I have to admit did take some getting used. Most of the episodes from the show feel like colorful acid trips, while others can either be extremely deep or drastically dark. There’s also a lot of ongoing arcs and plenty character development. The main driving force of the show is the will they, won’t they friendship between Star and Marco; which I invest every moment in. The show’s no “Gravity Falls”, but it does stand well on its own as an imaginative fantasy series!
