Majo no takkyûbin (1989)

Hayao Miyazaki is considered to be the Walt Disney of anime flicks and given my recent fascination with the genre I knew I had to watch these works of art; this movie I’ve seen the trailer many times on the VHS for “The Brave Little Toaster: Goes to Mars”, so I knew I had to check it out! In this anime feature, 13-year-old Kiki moves to a seaside town with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year alone, in accordance with her village’s tradition for witches in training. After learning to control her broomstick, Kiki sets up a flying courier service and soon becomes a fixture in the community. But when the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic abilities, she must overcome her self-doubt to get her powers back. The movie’s theme of self discovery and dazzling animation is what makes this quite a treat. I’d ride with Kiki any day!
