Ever since I saw the two animated shows (good and bad), two DC Animated Original Movies and read the comic books; I waited eagerly for this DC Comics property to be adapted in Live-Action and for a while now I thought it would never happen (after the scraped TNT Show); until the new streaming service “DC Universe” came around! The series features Dick Grayson/Robin (Brenton Thwaites), Kory Anders/Starfire (Anna Diop), Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft) and Garfield Logan/Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) as young heroes who join forces in their fight against evil. This gritty take on the “Teen Titans” franchise follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special girl possessed by a strange darkness, get involved in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Hot-headed Starfire and lovable Beast Boy join them along the way as together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes fighting evil. I’ll admit when the show announced I was concerned, because its excessive violence, F-Bombs and redesigns of Raven, Beast Boy and Starfire, although I still enjoyed Robin’s costume. But I quickly changed my mind when I watched the show. The show truly shines when the titular team assembles and the action scenes come in (mainly from Robin). And Raven, Beast Boy and Starfire have power-up modes that transitions them into their trademark skin colors. While I still think its a lazy excuse not to use make-up (sort of like with Martian Manhunter on Supergirl); still at least the characters are likable. Being a live-action show means they can now show the sexual side of Robin and Starfire’s relationship, although it is more tame compared to Hawk and Dove’s more explicit sex scene; also meet cute’s from Beast Boy and Raven. So its safe to say the show will get better as it progresses!
