As a kid, Nickelodeon has always been my favorite network growing up. I enjoy many memorable shows and well as the unforgettable characters. But probably one thing that always engrossed me was the love stories between characters. Here is my own personal Top 10 Nicktoon Couples. So don’t get angry if I prefer one couple over another for most of others. Also be wary of spoilers if you haven’t watched most of these shows!

10. Tommy and Rachel-“All Grown Up”

With the Rugrats spin-off dealing with a lot of teen drama, it was only a matter of time that they’d have a couple. Didi forces Tommy to attend Hebrew school to prepare for his bar mitzvah. While there, he meets Rachel, who is there studying for her bar mitzvah, and Tommy is instantly smitten. Rachel was overall a decent love interest for Tommy being kind and all, it was unfortunate that they broke up and didn’t split in the best of terms near the end. Maybe there is still hope for a Tommy and Kimi relationship, which I always shipped?

9. Eliza and Shane-“The Wild Thornberrys”

The only thing that was missing in The Wild Thornberrys was a love story for Eliza and I was glad to get one. At the request of the foundation, teenage rocker Shane G. joins the Thornberrys during their stay in Alaska. Since Eliza and Debbie both have a crush on Shane, they both go exploring with Shane only to discover how thick-headed he really is. The thing I liked about this relationship is that they had a five episode arc to develop it and unlike the previous entry, they parted ways in a loving way (after she admits her true feelings for him).

8. Ginger and Darren-“As Told By Ginger”

Now As Told By Ginger is the type of Nicktoon Show that deserved more attention than it did. The character of Ginger is so complex and real as much as her complicated love life. Ginger’s best friend is Darren and first true boyfriend. They start dating when Ginger studies at Avalanche Arts Academy until somewhere in their freshman year in high school. Soon they broke up when he started dating another giving us one of the saddest moments in Nick History! But if was a relief to know they got married in the future and had a daughter.

7. Jenny and Sheldon-“My Life As a Teenage Robot”

Say what you will Brad and Jenny Shippers out there, this is the couple I’ve always rooted for! Sheldon is Jenny’s self-proclaimed romantic admirer. However, no matter what he tries, Jenny still refuses his romantic advances, though she does care for him as a friend. It is also notable Sheldon has saved  Jenny’s life a few times and that usually leads to a possible attraction. I was happy to learn that if the series wasn’t cancelled they could have been an official couple (here’s hoping for a revival)!

6. Doug and Patti-“Nickelodeon’s Doug”

Here is the couple that started it all with the first ever Nicktoon Show Doug. Doug has a clear crush on Patti, and many of his Smash Adams and Quailman daydreams involve her as the damsel in distress. This is probably one of the few Nick Couples on this list that actually get along really well as good friends, but maybe even more than that in some of their most touching moments in the whole series. Now this is another Nicktoon Show that really needs more attention than it does mainly for a schoolyard crush most of us might relate too. Now I have never watched the Disney Show, mainly because it’s nowhere in sight, but it was good to know that they’d hook up someday based on what I got from a certain movie.

5. Danny and Sam-“Danny Phantom”

Whoa, talk about a couple that was practically forced to hook up thanks to the show Danny Phantom’s allies and villains. For most of the series, Danny and Sam denied having any romantic feelings for each other. However, since the very beginning, multiple other characters have accused them of being in a relationship (which they would quickly deny). Sam’s affection for Danny is quite obvious to most of the other characters on the show, particularly later in the series, often portraying jealousy whenever Danny is with another girl and stuttering to confess her feelings frequently. On the other hand, Danny is mostly oblivious to her feelings. I was relieved when they finally hooked up by the end of the series even if it might of been somewhat rushed. But once again the series was cancelled before we actually got to see how them being a couple would be like. Here’s hoping will all get that possible revival by said creator!

4. Timmy and Trixie-“The Fairly OddParents”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m also a Timmy and Tootie Shipper, although that kind of faded since the Live-Action Series was released (Ugh!). She is the primary recipient of Timmy’s love and, unlike Tootie, he is not afraid to show that he is in love with a girl when he is around her. Trixie has a mostly apathetic attitude toward Timmy, rarely going out her way to torment him like his enemies, but often giving him the cold shoulder or flat out rejecting him when he tries to come onto her. At times Trixie has warmed up to Timmy, although typically an event or Timmy’s actions in the episode, no matter how minor or done with good intentions, she will revert to her old ways, and Timmy will be “chasing” her again by the next episode. Even with The Fairly Oddparents losing its edge over the years at least this is a pairing I always look forward, even them sharing a passionate moment in a certain Trilogy. Unfortunately to this day Trixie hasn’t major role since season, with the creators in favor of introducing pointless new main characters (Ugh!), I’m keeping my fingers crossed they get back to this love arc someday.

3. Jimmy and Cindy-“The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius”

Unlike Arnold and Helga at the moment, it was only a matter of time these two would be an item. Of course this is also my only computer animated couple on this list, because no other show has taken in account of a blossoming romance (I’m looking at you show with a Juju and Talking Cow)! In the majority of the franchise, Jimmy and Cindy share a huge rivalry in both academics and physical abilities. Cindy was the smartest in her class before moving to Retroville, where she met Jimmy and the others. She lives across from Jimmy, whose intelligence put her at second place. Both being too prideful to acknowledge the other’s individual skills and knowledge, they both strive to outdo the other. They have somewhat of a love/hate relationship, due to their criticism and competitiveness toward each other, but secret admiration of each other along with it. While the spin-off series Planet Sheen did wreck my childhood, it always comforts me when I look back at the final sweetest moments these two shared in the series.

2. Aang and Katara-“Avatar: The Last Airbender”

Avatar: The Last Airbender is the most deep, action-packed,  and detailed show I’ve ever watched on Nickelodeon, but of course it is only strengthened by a blossoming romance that I cared about. The first thing Aang saw upon waking from his one-hundred year sleep was the face of the  waterbender, Katara, who was his liberator from the iceberg, along with her  brother, Sokka. Throughout his time at the South Pole, Aang instantly formed a tight bond with her; they connected over their bending and Katara instantly placed a lot of trust on the young boy. They had there ups and downs, but it made me emotional when they ended up together in the end as well as had children in the awesome sequel series The Legend of Korra, but he passed away then. Luckily I managed to see what they’re like as a couple in the recent graphic novel series, so worth the wait!

Here are some honorable mentions:

SpongeBob and Sandy-“SpongeBob SquarePants
Rudy and Penny-“Chalkzone”

1. Arnold and Helga-“Hey Arnold”

Come on, most of you knew this was coming! In the whole history of Hey Arnold, one of my most treasured Nicktoon Show, these two characters have always struck with me to this day. Arnold’s most iconic relationship throughout the series is with his classmate Helga. Unbeknownst to Arnold, Helga is secretly in love with him. Helga is afraid to tell Arnold her true feelings so she resorts to bullying him instead. As such, Arnold is usually wary whenever he’s near Helga, but he always maintains the belief that she’s a kind person deep down. They’ve had their worst moments, sweet moments and even their comforting moments as well as a declaration from Helga (the only good thing about a certain movie). But it was good to know that series creator stated they’d be together dozens of times and have children. Another reason it’s high on the list is because of the announcement of the long-awaited tv sequel Hey Arnold: Jungle Movie (2017), which I’m hoping will give the proper happy ending these two deserve (as well as Arnold finding his parents)!
